Quad Plus – The Future of Sustainable Manufacturing: Innovation in Industrial Automation

Since the first industrial revolution in the mid-1700s, innovation and automation have been the heart of industry in the US. Finding ways to do things faster, more precisely, and with less physical labor has led to exciting improvements in efficiency and worker safety.

The modern industrial revolution is centered around technology: how can we use computers and digital tech to automate even more while reducing human workers’ exposure to dangerous conditions?

Let’s take a look at some cutting-edge technologies that are driving innovations in industrial automation.

Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning

integrated-factory-production-line

Artificial intelligence has been widely discussed in recent months, but what does AI mean in industrial settings? Much of it comes down to machine learning: the ability of devices to learn and adapt without humans programming them to make those changes.

In real life, this means smart robots and drones with ever-increasing precision. This technology is useful for inspections, maintenance tasks, material handling, assembly, etc.

Another example is scanner technology, which can learn a multitude of materials and specifications and use AI-guided pattern recognition to spot anomalies, anticipate problems, and optimize production.

Speaking of Robots

Since the first assembly-line robots made their debut, robotics has been an important technology for reducing the need for human workers in hazardous conditions. Robots can work harder, longer, and in the most inhospitable conditions, sparing workers from accidents and injuries, especially those from repetitive motions.

Large industrial robots and smaller collaborative robots are common features in industrial environments, and both benefit from machine-learning technology. Robots can improve their abilities faster than ever with less reliance on human programmers.

This allows for machines that are more precise and have greater dexterity compared to single-task robots. Large machines can be operated with very little human interaction, and collaborative robots can become an extension of the worker as they perform a greater variety of tasks.

Data Collection & Storage

Wireless technology and cloud storage have made it easy for manufacturers to integrate IoT (Internet of Things) devices and sensors to collect data from endless sources. This data is used to improve production lines, enable remote operation of devices, improve energy usage, and so much more.

Current developments in this area include the rollout of 5G technology that provides high-speed connectivity with low latency. This allows faster, more accurate communication between devices, systems, and data storage.

Edge computing is another new technology used for fast or real-time data processing when even 5G communication is too slow. Rather than transferring all data to a central or cloud-based location for processing, critical information is processed as close to the devices collecting the data as possible.

Sustainability Through Efficiency

At Quad Plus, we know that manufacturers can’t just eliminate every piece of legacy equipment in favor of new technology. While we all work toward more sustainable practices, continually improving operational efficiency will keep us on the right path. Greater efficiency means less waste and less energy consumption while still providing the products people rely on.

Many types of older equipment can be integrated with newer technology that allows for tighter margins, better efficiency, and a safer workplace while still enjoying a long working life from critical equipment.

We recently helped this Steel Service Center improve the accuracy of their line so they can operate at a higher speed. We also implemented enhanced safety measures for a safer work environment.

Sustainable Bottom Line, Too

Integrating new technology and working toward sustainable operations benefits more than just the planet. It also directly improves your bottom line. When you need less energy, consume less materials, produce less waste, and provide a safe work environment, you will also see better profit margins.

Quad Plus experts put their industry experience to work every day to integrate new technologies and retrofit equipment in every industry. When you’re ready to maximize the profitability and sustainability of your operations, contact Jim Woulf at jwoulf@quadplus.com or call (920) 515-4155.

Zeta Group Engineering: Solving Real Manufacturing Issues With Mythology-Named Robots

Palletizing 3 Different Products with 1 Cobot Solution

The manufacturing industry is fast-paced and ever evolving. Because of this, efficiency and adaptability are crucial to business. In order to keep up, businesses must keep evolving the technologies in their manufacturing facilities.

Recently, one of Zeta Group Engineering’s customers needed help reimagining their manufacturing floor. They needed new technology to adapt to their various palletizing needs. Our solution was to use the Hermes Mobile Cobot Solution, equipped with interchangeable tooling options.

The Customer’s Needs

The customer had a production line that handled multiple pallet patterns and diverse box types. Because of this, they knew they needed a solution that could adapt to this versatility.

Zeta’s Solution

To solve this issue, we customized our Hermes Mobile Cobot to handle these variations in pallet patterns and box types. This solution included four pallet patterns and two end of arm tooling options: a fork tool and a multi-zone vacuum tool.

The fork tool was used for cases which were not sealed and couldn’t be handled from their tops. The vacuum tool was used for the cases that could be handled from their tops.

To enhance adaptability, we incorporated a tool-changing device, allowing the operator to effortlessly switch between the two types of tooling.

Hurckman Mechanical Expands to Downtown Green Bay – See What’s New!

In an exciting development for Hurckman Mechanical Industries (HMI), the company has relocated its headquarters from Velp Avenue to a prime downtown Green Bay location at 164 N. Broadway. This strategic move is a testament to HMI’s impressive growth and marks a new chapter in the company’s storied history.

Relocation Driven by Growth and Innovation:

Founded over 70 years ago, Hurckman Mechanical Industries has continuously grown and innovated to meet the demands of the industrial, commercial, and marine sectors. Brad Hurckman, the current CEO and owner, has overseen unprecedented growth in the company, leading to the need for expanding its facilities.

“The move to our downtown Green Bay location was all about the growth we’ve seen as a company,” Brad stated. The former headquarters on Velp Avenue had been optimized to its limits, and expanding there was not feasible due to construction costs.

Our Comprehensive Services:

HMI specializes in providing top-tier mechanical contracting services, including:

  • Plumbing
  • HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning)
  • Process Piping
  • Mechanical Insulation
  • Fabrication
  • Refrigeration

These services are integral to our design/build solutions, ensuring that we meet and exceed the needs of our clients through advanced technology and expert craftsmanship.

Why Downtown Green Bay?

The new location at 164 N. Broadway offers several advantages:

  • Proximity to Production Campus: Ensuring operational efficiency and seamless coordination.
  • Increased Space: Supporting continued growth for the next 10-15 years.
  • Return to Roots: A symbolic homecoming as HMI’s first office was nearby on Pearl Street.
Enhanced Facilities for Future Growth:

The new headquarters will utilize two of the building’s three floors, offering enhanced amenities for employees, including a rooftop lounge and retreat. This relocation supports HMI’s commitment to providing a positive work environment and maintaining high standards of service.

Despite the move, the Velp Avenue location will remain integral to HMI’s operations. It will continue to serve as the primary production facility, with plans to eventually consolidate the project management and service groups at the new downtown location.

A Fortuitous Find:

The discovery of the new building was a stroke of luck. “I came down this road and saw a for sale sign on this building,” Brad shared. The location’s suitability and proximity to the production campus made it an ideal choice for HMI’s expanding needs.

Looking Ahead:

With the acquisition of an additional 3.4 acres on Donald Street near Velp for future production sites, Hurckman Mechanical Industries is well-positioned to handle increased demand and explore new opportunities. The strategic move to downtown Green Bay not only marks a return to HMI’s roots but also sets the stage for continued innovation and growth.

The relocation of Hurckman Mechanical Industries’ headquarters to downtown Green Bay is a significant milestone in the company’s history. This move reflects HMI’s dedication to growth and excellence in the mechanical contracting industry. Stay tuned for more updates as HMI continues to innovate and expand its footprint in the heart of Green Bay.
