GREEN BAY, Wisconsin – May X, 2024 — Paper Converting Machine Company (PCMC), part of BW Converting Solutions, recently held two free information-packed open houses at its state-of-the-art Packaging Innovation Center in Green Bay, Wisconsin, April 23-25. More than 160 people attended the three-day event which focused on both digital printing for flexible packaging as well as digital and flexo printing for the folding carton industry. “We were very pleased with the turnout and quality of information we were able to provide the industry,” said Rodney Pennings, PCMC’s Director of Sales-Print. “The spirit of the Packaging Innovation Center and our Power Packs educational video series is to serve as a resource for print and packaging industry information, demos, trials, and training along with research and development opportunities.”

PCMC open house - People watching presentation

The recent open houses were true to the vision. A wealth of market and trend data, industry analysis, and best practice information was provided by guest speakers from across the globe including Dr. Sean Smyth, industry consultant and analyst, Jason Thelander of Memjet, Alison Keane of the Flexible Packaging Association, Dennis Gignac of BW Papersystems, Sean Hampson and Keith Grimm of Hybrid, Eric Nelson of Xitron and Mary Schilling of Schilling Inkjet Consulting. In addition to guest speakers, PCMC provided up close and personal demonstrations of two exciting new presses.

On Tuesday and Wednesday, attendees were able to see the ION hybrid press live in action. The ION highlights the marriage of traditional analog flexographic printing with digital hybrid printing platforms, providing the ability to produce larger digital runs cost competitively. “ION meets market needs for wider, faster printing with highest quality,” says Windell McGill, PCMC ION Launch Manager. “It is designed to handle up to 400 feet per minute with web widths of 36, 42 and 52 inches for paper, film and folding carton.”

The ION is a fully modular system with digital CMYK and flexo print stations that can be custom configured to meet a variety of customer challenges. Jenifer Grace of LaCore Pressworx, the first customer to purchase an ION press, was also on hand to share her experience with the new press. “We’re in the nutraceutical space and our clients are typically start-ups or small influencer-brand product manufacturers. We need the flexibility of short runs and the ability to quickly change from one flavor or ingredient to the next without wasted time or materials,” says Grace. “The ION is going to allow us to meet these needs. In addition, we’re a Texas corporation and the incredible on-site service PCMC provides and the fact that they are here in the states were critical factors in our decision to partner with them.”

On Thursday, attendees were treated to a press-side demonstration of the high-production 59 inch wide, 10+2 color Fusion CI folding carton press. “The Fusion has great energy and time-saving features like automatic drum cleaning and automatic impression setting,“ said Mike Shaw, PCMC Regional Sales Manager. “The Fusion reduces energy usage through low-power-consumption components, design and operation. It offers fast changeovers and lower ink usage,” said Scott Derouin, PCMC Regional Sales Manager. “The Fusion lowers operating costs and provides a quick return on investment and those benefits increase significantly when moving from sheet-fed to web-fed production.”

“We thank everyone who attended our open house event,” said Pennings. “We’re thrilled to be able to share the latest industry information from true industry experts and show-off our amazing new presses in the process.”

Quad Plus: The Future of Machine Safety and Operator Well-Being

The Future of Machine Safety and Operator Well-being

No matter what industry you are in, new technology will always be part of planning for the future. In the industrial landscape, technological advancements have had a continual impact on production lines and workplace safety. As we head into the future of manufacturing, the focus will remain on more efficient operations while optimizing for the well-being of the workforce.

Enhanced Data Collection & Analysis

Most manufacturers are already working with systems that collect and analyze data throughout their operations. What’s changing for the future is the ability to capture increasingly large amounts of precise data and then turn that data into actionable information faster than ever. New technology also allows for better adaptation to changing work environments where flexibility is critical, such as outdoor operations.

Advance Sensor Technology

The first part of the equation is data collection. Sensor technology measures data points such as vibration, temperature, pressure, humidity, and more. As sensor technology improves, measurements become more precise and faster to obtain. This allows manufacturers to collect an endless amount of information in real-time.

AI and Analytics

Analyzing industrial data involves complex algorithms that compare data with set objectives and then take prescribed action based on that comparison. Artificial intelligence and machine learning are helping human programmers develop algorithms that allow for tight quality control and safer operations.
Older technology required manufacturers to rely on reports compiled after a production run or a review of collected data following an event such as an injury or unexpected stop. Increasingly powerful computers and smart AI technology are producing algorithms that can analyze vast amounts of data while production lines are running.

The result can lead to predicting equipment failures before they happen to allow a scheduled repair and minimize downtime. Risks to operators that may have gone unnoticed by traditional safety systems can also be identified and corrected.

Engineer monitoring AI dashboard
Human Operators and Collaborative Robots

Collaborative robots, or “cobots,” are designed to work alongside human operators in a shared workspace. They can be used for repetitive and tedious tasks or tasks that are dangerous for human operators. A variety of technologies, such as AI, machine vision, and cognitive computing allow these robots to have an awareness of their surroundings so they can perform tasks in close proximity to people.

Collaborative robots can be programmed to complete tasks in place of humans and designed to protect the safety of the humans around them. By utilizing increasingly sensitive sensors and smart algorithms, cobots let workers be more efficient and safer than ever before.

A Collaborative Approach

With every new advancement in technology, the way humans interact with machines must be examined. Intuitive interfaces help reduce the risk of errors, and ergonomic features protect people from injuries related to repetitive movements, poor posture, and more.

Operators must also be aware of the latest safety protocols and technologies to make the most of every advancement. Manufacturers who foster a culture of safety and education along with a holistic integration of advanced technologies will be in the best position for success in the long run.

GBIG News Corrugated and Paper Manufacturing May 29, 2024

Marty Oaks

Companies in the Board and Corrugated Industries plan to join International Paper in raising prices in June with increases earlier in the year. You can expect increases from $50.00 – $80.00 per ton for corrugating material. Based upon the previous price increase, there are questions about whether the prices would stick. Industry observers and analysts see demand has been weak over the past two quarters. It is expected that the trend will continue. We have seen investments in new plants and equipment. However, we are seeing companies idle or shutdown older facilities and lay off employees!

We have witnessed prices for OCC, a major feedstock, continue to increase over the past 5 years. In 2017 China shutdown taking the USA recycled stock which provides abundant of recycled pulp in the USA. However, recycled pulp replaced virgin pulp production in the USA with just 3 Wisconsin Based companies producing virgin pulp. We have seen China and Indonesia USA based companies convert to packaging grades competing with USA based companies. China’s Nine Dragons is planning to increase the company capacity by 10%. This means an additional 2 million tons of goods including folding carton, sack kraft paper and printing/writing grades of paper. Indonesian based Paper Excellence/Domtar Kingsport, Tennesee expansion in packaging grades makes the site home to the second largest recycled containerboard machine in North America.

In May 2024, reports surfaced that Brazil’s Suzano Pulp and paper company made an offer to buy International Paper for $15 Billion in an all-cash deal. The USA has continued to SELL OUT the Paper and Pulp industry. It is time to rebuild and support the Wisconsin Paper and Pulp industry. Wisconsin Paper and Pulp Manufacturing is down to 8,200 people with our Paper and Pulp equipment ranging from 50 to 120 years old! I spent time with a industry experts discussing paper and pulp manufacturing and putting together a report on the Paper and Pulp Industry in Wisconsin. The BIGGEST feedback is the Wisconsin Paper and Pulp Industry is limping along trying to keep the OLD EQUIPMENT running with limited investments to upgrade their manufacturing.

Wisconsin Government and Industry will have to decide the importance of Paper and Pulp Manufacturing in Wisconsin. We have a lot of companies dependent on Paper Manufacturing in Wisconsin. We will be putting out further information on the need to rebuild paper and pulp manufacturing in Wisconsin. I have prepared a presentation on the status of Paper and Pulp Manufacturing and its impact on other industries and employment. I will be traveling across Wisconsin and visiting facilities doing my presentation.

Trends and Updates

  • We are seeing E-commerce sales continue to grow and consumer spending has seen a slowdown over the past two quarters.
  • We are witnessing corrugated companies’ idle capacity and shut down older facilities!
  • Amazon is looking at more venues to reduce packaging and it will have a significant impact on the Corrugated Industry!
  • We can continue to see price increases due to inflation and operating costs!

Green Bay Innovation Group Helped Apricity Raise Almost $43,000 in Donations

Dear Marty and Friends with Green Bay Innovation Group,

Apricity logo

“I will never forget the second chance I was given through you and your program. You helped
me find hope, healing and recovery from my substance use addictions. From the bottom of my heart I thank each of you. I couldn’t have done it without you.”

A former Apricity residential treatment and recovery employment participant shared these words of gratitude with Apricity staff. The Green Bay Innovation Group deserves her gratitude, too!

Marty, per our past conversations and written correspondence, I am writing again to share gratitude for the Green Bay Innovation Group’s $5,000 gift Apricity received last November 2023. Your generous gift was applied to establish a match for Apricity’s year-end fundraising campaign that launched at the end of November 2023 and concluded January 15, 2024. The Green Bay Innovation Group (GBIG), along with two other donors provided a combined total match of $20,000, and enabled Apricity to raise almost $43,000 (including the match) to provide treatment, recovery supportive employment, housing and services to people with substance use disorders in 2024!

Your gift was a meaningful lift to Apricity that catapulted other donor giving, making an even bigger impact on programs that support our clients, transitional employees and sober living participants we serve. Thank you!

Were you aware Apricity raises funds for their programs that support people with substance use disorders year-round? We do this through grant requests, donor direct asks and two fundraising campaigns. Individuals and businesses may donate to Apricity anytime via the donate button on our website. Apricity also hosts two fundraising campaigns, where match funds are established to help encourage even greater giving. These fundraising campaigns are as follows and raise funds for all of our treatment and recovery programs:

  • Recovery Month (runs throughout the month of Sept.)
  • Year-End Appeal (runs end of November through January 15)

It is most difficult for Apricity to find individuals and businesses to help establish a match to support our Year-End Appeal. In our recent conversation, you graciously committed $5,000 to support Apricity in 2024. It would be most helpful if you would agree to have those funds help establish a $15,000-$20,000 match we look to obtain for our 2024 Year-End Appeal.

Apricity thank you notes
Click on the image to read all the thank-you notes

With this $5,000 gift for the Year-End Appeal, GBIG would:
be mentioned in social media (Facebook, Instagram), mass eblasts and direct mail to over 600 individuals/businesses closely connected to Apricity from the end of November 2024 through January 15, 2025. Support Apricity treatment, recovery employment, housing and recovery support services for clients in our services with substance use disorders that help them find a new path in life. be able to issue a check to Apricity before the end of October, which you were hoping could happen with this gift.

If GBIG is amenable to utilizing $5,000 to help establish the Year-End Appeal match, please confirm by September 1, 2024. Thank you for your consideration.

In the meantime, please watch for our 2023 Annual Report to be mailed and emailed before June. I also am sharing notes of thanks from several of our Apricity’s Contract Packaging (our recovery employment program) employees who are learning job and soft-skills while receiving recovery support and earning an income.

You make a difference!

Best regards,
Jill Harp Development Director

Quad Plus: Leveraging Industry Expertise for Turnkey Solutions in System Integration

The rapid pace of advancing technology means manufacturers are facing the need to update equipment and maintain tight margins to stay ahead of the competition. Integrating upgrades could mean a multi-layered project involving the management and coordination of several contractors – a headache few manufacturers have time for.

Turnkey solutions in system integration offer streamlined installations and a single point of contact for manufacturers. Partnering with the right provider saves time and money while minimizing disruptions to production.

Choosing a partner means finding not only integration expertise, but also experience with your industry to ensure lasting solutions with a focus on your bottom line.

Legacy Equipment

No matter what the industry, prolonging the working life of major equipment is critical to the profitability of every operation.

When a cold rolling mill customer needed help with their single-point scanning system, repair technicians discovered an outdated system with limited capabilities, no automatic controls, and missing schematics and descriptions.

Quad Plus technicians put their industry experience to work integrating a complete electrical retrofit and then calculating the complex algorithm for electronic camming functionality, updating safety technology, and providing the customer with detailed documentation of the entire assembly.

New Technology

2 staff assembling Quad Plus machine

Gauging technology has allowed manufacturers to significantly reduce waste while delivering products that meet increasingly tight criteria on machinery running faster than ever.

The pace of new technology in the gauging sector is almost as fast as the manufacturing it allows, but total equipment overhauls get expensive even quicker.

When this roofing manufacturer was ready to implement new gauging technology, the challenge for our integrators was to preserve the existing gauge frame as much as possible to reduce expenses.

Using their knowledge of the roofing industry, our experts seamlessly integrated new gauging technology. They kept going to provide additional multi-layer thickness feedback and delamination detection that was missing from the original system.

Safer Work Environment

Worker safety is the priority of every manufacturer, no matter the industry. Still, a deep understanding of the risks associated with different industrial practices is critical to implementing proper safety controls.

We received a call from a coating company needing to upgrade their deteriorating gamma backscatter fixed point gauge system. In this case, it is immediately apparent why experience with the removal and disposal of nuclear-based sensors is critical.

Quad Plus is trained and authorized to provide this service, and our standard scanning frame solution was a straightforward turnkey replacement that made the job easy.

Turnkey Solutions with Customized Results

The oil and gas industry provides plenty of unique challenges, from tight schedules and strict regulations to extremely adverse conditions for sensitive equipment. Turnkey solutions from knowledgeable partners are critical for manufacturers in this industry to meet demanding expectations.

An oil and gas industry equipment manufacturer needed a testing facility for the high horsepower pumps used in well stimulation. A complete solution was required: the customer wanted the design, construction, installation, and certification of the facility from a single vendor.

The Quad Plus team has experience in all aspects of the petroleum industry, allowing us to provide a turnkey solution that meets the customer’s specific needs. Self-powered test stands fully equipped with support, safety, and other services are now ready for our customer to meet the extreme demands of their customers.

Experience & Expertise in Superior Solutions

Managing multiple vendors is complicated and stressful, especially for comprehensive installations. From coordinating schedules to competing egos, a one-stop solution is the best way to focus on meeting the objectives of your project rather than the people necessary to complete it.

The Quad Plus team has experts from every industry with decades of experience installing, operating, inspecting, and repairing the equipment that is critical for your operations. To enjoy calling the shots to a single point of contact and results that exceed your expectations, contact Jim at jwoulf@quadplus.com or call (920) 515-4155.
