Chase: Business Leaders Outlook

Optimism is up from January – but it’s far below pre-pandemic levels.

Chase logo

Despite an uptick in optimism over the past six months, midsize business leaders in the United States are far less optimistic about the national economy now than they were in the years before the pandemic.

According to our 2023 midyear Business Leaders Outlook survey, 29% of leaders have a positive outlook about the U.S. economy today, up from 22% in January. From 2012 to early 2020, however, the average level of optimism was 66%.

Attitudes about the global economy also remain low. Only 15% of leaders are optimistic about the global economy today. And while that is up from January (8%), it is much lower than before the pandemic, when the average level of optimism was almost 30%.

Concerns about a recession are mixed. Nearly half (45%) expect an economic downturn this year or believe we are already in one, while 20% are unsure about a recession.

But there are plenty of bright spots in the report. Most leaders (67%) are still optimistic about their own company’s performance. More than half expect their sales and profits to increase this year. And 85% expect to add or keep staff.

On the policy front, two-thirds of leaders believe the Fed should pause rate hikes; only 16% believe the Fed should raise rates. Even fewer (11%) think rates should be cut.

GBIG News Marinette & Oconto Tour

BPM Inc. office facade
BPM Inc

We are thinking of the Converting Corridor from Green Bay to Milwaukee. However, Wisconsin has over 220 companies with Converting Capabilities across the State! GBIG will be breaking out what is Converting to better understand the industry and its impact on the State of Wisconsin. In the past, we simply lumped Converting into one category and included it with the Paper Industry in annual sales revenue.

Marinette, Oconto, and surrounding areas have some interesting companies in the 5P Industries.

  • BPM, Inc. in Peshtigo is an innovative manufacturer of specialty paper, converted products and packaging.
  • Biorgin Specialty Products in Menomonee, MI produces Sustainable Paper Products for the Food Service industry includes Paper Bags, Food Containers, Sandwich Wraps, Tray Liners, Coffee Filters, etc. Biorgin Manufacturing facility in Lady Smith, WI produces Napkins, Paper Towels, Eco-Friendly Toilet Paper, and Wipes.
  • Resolute Forest Products operates a recycled pulp mill that source 100% of its fiber from recovered paper.
  • Kimber-Clark produces Shop Towel, Scott Rags-in-a-Box, Wypall wiping products and Viva paper towels for household and consumer use.
  • St. Paper, LLC. produces bath tissue, paper towels, and napkins with facilities in Oconto Falls, Isle of Wight, VA, and a new facility in Duluth, MN.

GBIG NEWS SHOWCASE OVERVIEW

The Green Bay Innovation Group would like to thank ALL of our Exhibitors for the 5P Showcase on September 26, 2023. We had an outstanding group of Exhibitors showcasing their new equipment and supporting technologies. The Expo focused on Flexible Packaging, Paper, Printers, Plastics, and the Converting Industries. At times, we forget the outstanding manufacturers supplying state-of-the-art equipment to these industries and they had a great presence at the event. The event was very casual and a perfect setting for one-on-one conversations and introductions.

Featured speaker Sam Schlaich
Featured Speaker Sam Schlaich

We want to thank our outstanding Speakers and the room was standing room only!

  • Sam Schlaich is a government affairs professional with a law degree with over 10 years in the government sector. He is with the Flexible Packaging Association representing Converters of Film, Flexible Packaging, Foil, Paper, and other substrates for food, medical devices, and other industrial products. He was outstanding in presenting an update and the challenges of the industry. Go to: www.flexpack.org for more information.

Our Panel on Innovation included.

Panel of 5p Showcase speakers
  • AJ Buran – GOpak Flexibles Co-Founder
  • Al Grumann – Amcor, R&D Engineer of Printing and Process Development
  • Michael Branstrom – PCMC, Global Products Applications Lead
  • Dean Benjamin – Pixelle Specialty Solutions, Director of New Products

A.J. Buran Co-Founder of GOpak Flexibles was the moderator, and they covered the Flexible Packaging Industry addressing innovation and the challenges of the industry.

Summary:

Trends – brands are moving toward smaller runs and the need for shorter lead times which are spawning innovation for machines, presses, converting equipment and fillers that print, convert and handle lower volumes.

Sustainability – “More sustainable” is the echo in the packaging industry. Flexible packaging has a strong play of improved sustainability using a lower % of plastics and compared to rigid and lowering the carbon footprint. There is a shift toward paper-based products in the industry which is creating innovation around new paper products and coatings for longer self-life.

Single Use – Consumer and business demands to reduce single use plastics are pushing the development of paper structures. Brand owners need to use packaging that protects their product to the end consumer. Conventional materials have set the bar high.

Innovation is a process that drives new products for consumers and for business. Innovations take time, money and testing to meet the requirements from supply chain to package printing, converting, filling to the end consumer.

Overview: PFAS, short for perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances, were developed in the
1950s to prevent food from sticking to packaging or cookware, make clothes and carpets
resistant to stains, create effective firefighting foam, and many other applications. The
widespread use and resistance to degradation of these “forever chemicals” have led to
increasing levels of air, water, and soil contamination. Consequently, there is a government-
wide approach to identify routes of PFAS exposure, the associated health risks, and means for
accelerating cleanup.
Green Bay Innovation Group (GBIG), in partnership with the Iowa State University Polymer and
Food Protection Consortium and the University of Wisconsin Grainger Institute for Engineering,
has organized an event to cover the cause and extent of the problem, current and impending
regulations, and emerging solutions, with emphasis on packaging materials.

Key Speakers and Topics: This event will feature a group of nationally recognized PFAS
subject matter experts, including the following:

  • Dr. Keith Vorst, Director, Polymer and Food Protection Consortium, Iowa State University – Critical Knowledge Gaps for PFAS in Packaging

On September 26, learn about the businesses that set the region apart for its manufacturing strengths. From printers to paper, plastics, and roll goods converters, this Showcase event expands in its second year. Hosted by Green Bay Innovation Group (GBIG), the full day takes place at Green Bay’s Radisson Hotel & Conference Center.

“This expo features companies with industry updates in several categories and provides outstanding networking opportunities,” says Marty Ochs of GBIG. “We live at the center of innovation, technology, and production capabilities. We have planned for a larger expo and visitor attendance this year.”

Aspects include:

  • Paper, pulp, and related producers where Wisconsin still dominates.
  • Packaging and printing on substrates including paper, film, and nonwovens materials.
  • Providers of analytic data services and equipment where growth continues.
  • Technologies to increase volumes on production lines in converting and packaging.
  • Suppliers who assist with branding strategies, marketing, and promotions.
  • Testing companies who assist in meeting quality and processing specifications.
  • Breakthroughs in digital, 3D Printing, and flexographic printing for packaging.
  • Innovation in the nonwovens industry with fabrics that wipe and filter viruses/Covid.

“We plan to spotlight exceptional exhibitors as they come back this September, and we’re offering a forum for new companies coming on board,” says Susan Stansbury co-host. “You can find these companies at national shows, but they appreciate showing off their wares in their home territory. This area is ‘the converting corridor.’”

Notes Marty Ochs, “Over the next couple of months, we will be reporting on a cross-section of exhibitors and plans, including a keynote speaker from the Flexible Packaging Association. In addition, a panel of other speakers on innovation is on board.”

The location at the Radisson Hotel and Conference Center represents an expanded space for exhibitors. The cost to attend for the day is $50.00 including lunch and refreshments. The Expo Hall will be open from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. followed by networking until 6:00 p.m.
