Menasha Packaging Employee Named 2022 Mentor of the Year at Local Manufacturing Student Apprenticeships Award Ceremony

Dedication to Helping

Anna Futter with MPCGPS team

Anna Futter, a production lead at Menasha Packaging Company, a subsidiary of Menasha Corporation, recently received the Excellence in Mentorship Award from GPS Education Partners (GPSEd), Wisconsin’s only manufacturing-specific, work-based student apprenticeship program. The award, which was given during the GPSEd Senior Graduation ceremony on Wednesday, May 25 in Neenah, recognizes Futter’s dedication to helping apprentices, and her openness to serving as a guide and resource.

Menasha Packaging and other Fox Cities’ companies partner with GPSEd’s Manufacturing Youth Apprenticeship Program to support six local high schools from three school districts, in which students from those high schools gain on-the-job experience while fulfilling academic requirements. A key element of the GPSEd program is the skilled mentors, who are employees of the partner companies and provide a vital role in training the students in essential job functions and soft skills. Each year GPSEd acknowledges the dedicated efforts of the mentors and instituted the prestigious Excellence in Mentorship Award in 2013 to recognize the contributions of workplace mentors and their impact on student learners.

“Anna is an exceptional mentor to students,” said Bill Wiesmueller, GPS Work-Based Learning Coordinator. “She is very approachable and easy to talk to. Anna is equally fair and thoughtful, and firm when needed. Her patience and willingness to go the extra step to support students made her a natural choice for the Excellence in Mentorship Award.”

Futter has been employed at Menasha Packaging since 2019 and has served as the dedicated student mentor for all GPS apprentices at the Menasha Packaging Promotional Print Solutions facility in Neenah.

“What a great honor for Anna,” said Jeremy Wittmann, Pressroom Manager for Menasha Packaging. “Shortly after starting at Menasha Packaging, we asked her to work with the GPS program, mentoring four students her first year. In her role, she works with the students each day, providing them direction when working in the plant. She is an incredible asset to both Menasha Packaging and GPS!”

Menasha Packaging has partnered with GPSEd since 2017, and in 2020, Menasha Packaging repurposed space in one of its Neenah facilities to serve as the GPS Fox Cities Education Center where annually nearly 40 local high school students attend class for three hours of their school day and work at a Fox Cities’ partner company the remaining five hours of the day. Student apprentices for Menasha Packaging work in one of the company’s manufacturing facilities in the Fox Cities or in Hartford, Wis. Students complete one to two years of apprenticeship experience in their assigned facility, earn their high school diploma and are ultimately offered a full-time position. Students also have the option to pursue higher education through a technical college. This year, a total of 26 students graduated from the Fox Cities GPSEd program, which was the largest graduating class among GPSEd’s multiple Education Centers across Wisconsin.

“It’s so inspiring to see how the collective efforts of the education community, business partners, students, GPSEd and strong mentors, like Anna, have influenced and expanded local work-based learning opportunities over the past five years,” said Jennifer Twombly, Vice President of HR Transformation at Menasha Corporation, who spearheaded the company’s partnership in the program. “While the tight labor market the past two years has prioritized the need for businesses to pursue alternative strategies to fill job openings, what’s most compelling to Menasha Corporation in investing in work-based learning is the role we can play in helping students discover their passion, purpose and desired path following high school graduation. With the projected talent shortage in manufacturing and the skilled trades, these community partnerships are vital to develop the next generation workforce and unlock potential career opportunities many high school students may not have otherwise considered.”

George Huber Professor of Engineering at UW Madison and Brandon Fetterly Professor of Chemistry at UW Platteville Meeting and Tour Update

June 17, 2022

George Huber

On Friday, June 17, 2022, I met with Professor George Huber, the Harvey Spangler Professor of Chemical Engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Huber is leading the new multi-university plastic recycling research center. In addition, Dr. Brandon Fetterly at UW Platteville with a PHD in Organic Chemistry joined us in our conversations and tour. Our primary focus was to get a better understanding of the research being done at the University of Wisconsin on plastic recycling. The U.S. Department of Energy is funding a new $10 million Multi-University Center on Chemical up cycling of Waste Plastics (CUWP) under the direction of Professor Huber. As we are aware, 9 percent of the plastic waste around world has been recycled. Twelve percent has been incinerated but 79% is still lingering in landfills or breaking down into micro plastics in the oceans. Unfortunately, even recycled plastics are often down cycled into less valuable products that eventually end up in the dump.

The Green Bay Innovation Group has moved forward to have UW Platteville explore the potential of incineration of plastics with doing research on the viability of it and its impact on the environment. The Green Bay Innovation Group would like to bring together the Universities and Businesses to better understand the impact of plastics to try to come up with better realistic solutions to the problem. We ALL recognize that Wisconsin leads the Nation in the 5P and Converting Industries in the packaging industries. Wisconsin has the industries plus our world class educational institutions to come up with solutions to address and overcome the plastic problems facing us worldwide!

On October 25, 2022, George Huber will be introducing CUWP as a forward-looking resource group that is developing executable sustainability solutions based on sound science. We will meet at Amor 2301 Industrial Dr. in Neenah, WI starting at 2:00 pm. Kevin Nelson Director of Material Science will host and lead the event.

On November 16, 2022, GBIG will have a tour of Placon’s Recycling Center in Madison followed by networking starting at 10 am to 12:00 pm and a lunch off premise.

The Plastic Dilemma

Marty Ochs

93% of global consumers say COVID-19 influenced their views on sustainability, brands and environmental issues for product purchases.  As we return to normal, business are switching more and more to eco-products with new innovative plastics and paper fiber products.  We still see a lot of GREEN-WASHING of products. 62% of consumers are willing to change their buying behavior to reduce the negative impact on the environment.

We are seeing more and more bans on plastic worldwide especially in Europe, China and India with governments imposing restrictions and penalties on plastics.  However, we have to recognize the full impact that plastics have on our daily lives!  Simply, plastics are very inexpensive and can be used for so many packaging solutions.

Can we do without plastic…probably NOT!  However, the plastics industry has to address the issue with more bio-degradable plastics without using petroleum.   We have to recognize that Paper has its limitations. Number one is the cost and will the consumer pay the price for paper?  Two, the USA is limited in pulp and paper production capabilities to product the products.  The Wisconsin Paper Industry has tremendous opportunities to expand our paper and pulp production. Wisconsin has ALL the resources necessary to re-invent the paper, film and plastics industries!  In addition, Wisconsin has tremendous resources for converting paper and film products to new innovative packaging products.  The Wisconsin Paper Industry has to accept the challenge. GBIG will be bringing together our industries, government and our Universities to support one another.

Here are some examples of alternative materials that could play a significant role for the flexible packaging industry and our flexible packaging companies are leading the way!

  • Bio-based Plastics typically use food crops such as corn and sugarcane with both commodities readily available in surplus.  However, the current supply chain will create issues and there is reluctance to using food resources for packaging products.
  • Polyactic acid (PLA) is a transparent sold polymer that is similar to PETE polymer but has a significant lower maximum continuous use temperature.
  • Poly hydroxyalkanoate (PHA) is a much eco-friendly polymer that can handle high temperatures and decompose in soil and waterways.  Both alternatives are made from fermented corn starch and they can decompose up to 90% within 90 days if disposed properly.
  • Paper-based Packaging like corrugated boxes and other forms of paper-based packaging are biodegradable unless it is recycled and does not end up in the landfill!

When it comes to plastic, film and flexible packaging formats for single use, we recognize the cost advantages and to use it.  However, these types of single-use plastic are simply very challenging to recycle.  The plastic products are very lightweight with very little material per packaging piece.  The second issue is getting them collected, sorted and ready to be recycled.

In addition, flexible packaging is more highly contaminated with substrates such as inks, dyes, coating and creating additional issues for recycling. Simply, the USA doesn’t have that capability available to handle ALL of the plastics.   Minnesota in the spring of 2023, has a $24 million, 170,000-square-foot plastic recycling plant that will be in operation with the goal to expand film recycling infrastructure and the supply of recycled resin for use in new products supported by a number of large companies in Minnesota along with Charter Next Generation based in Wisconsin.  The residential recycling rate for film and flexible packaging in 2020 was just 2 percent!
