Trees for Tomorrow and WPS Foundation Celebrate Nearly 80 Years of Partnership

EAGLE RIVER, Wis. — Trees For Tomorrow (TFT), an environmental education center, recently hosted its 60th annual Natural Resources Careers Exploration Week (NRCEW) for high school students. This milestone weeklong program equips students with the tools, real-world knowledge, and professional networks needed to confidently explore career paths in natural resources. At a time when young people are making critical decisions about their futures, NRCEW provides vital guidance through expert advice and highly engaging, hands-on activities.

As part of this career-readiness initiative, industry professionals from Wisconsin Public Service (WPS) volunteered their time to connect directly with participants. These experts shared their industry knowledge, giving students a firsthand look at how renewable energy resources, including solar and hydro systems, safely power local communities. Students engaged in meaningful dialogue with the energy professionals, gaining invaluable insights into day-to-day operations, safety protocols, and future career, job, and internship pathways.

“The experience of learning directly from practicing professionals adds an invaluable layer to presentations about careers in natural resources,” said Casey Sprotte, TFT NRCEW Coordinator, extending gratitude to all the speakers who volunteered their time. “This is a life-changing week, with everyone, from chaperones to students, being impacted by the event. It’s incredibly rewarding to see professionals explain their passion and form relationships with youth who share a love for nature during this week each year.”

This mentorship highlights a historical connection: the WPS Foundation is among Trees For Tomorrow’s longest-standing partner, with a relationship that spans nearly eight decades.

While WPS professionals enrich high school experiences like NRCEW with their expert knowledge, the WPS Foundation provides vital annual funding that supports TFT’s core K-12 educational programming. Most notably, the foundation provides annual financial support to sponsor regional schools within WPS territory, allowing them to participate in TFT’s School Outdoor Learning Experiences (SOLE) journeys.

Each year, this funding directly benefits 7 to 8 regional schools and more than 200 students. Sponsoring these immersive outdoor experiences allows students from schools such as Three Lakes Middle School, St. Germain Elementary, Mosinee Middle School, Florence Middle School, John Dewey Academy, Lombardi Middle School, and STEM Academy to build a foundational connection to environmental science and sustainability.

The enduring collaboration between Trees For Tomorrow and the WPS Foundation continues to cultivate the next generation of environmental stewards, combining expert professional mentorship with critical funding to ensure Wisconsin’s youth are prepared to lead a sustainable future.

Inks for More Sustainable Packaging Print: Emerging Trends and Technologies

Manufacturers and converters today require inks that do far more than produce attractive print. Inks used must help packaging pass through recycling systems, comply with global regulations, and perform reliably on next-generation materials. As the regulatory landscape evolves, one thing is clear: the future of ink is tightly linked to eco-friendly packaging innovation.

Natasha Jeremic, Head of Piezo Inks, Domino Printing Sciences, explores the latest advancements in ink technology and how these are giving converters and brands greater flexibility, efficiency, and regulatory confidence:

  1. Sustainable, next-generation chemistries developed for new substrates
    Ink innovation is evolving to meet new sustainability demands, with formulations shifting toward renewable colourants, bio-based ingredients, and plant-oil-based formulations. These chemistries are specifically engineered to perform well on the growing volume of fibre-based, bio-based, and recyclable substrates and mono-materials entering the market, helping converters protect print quality as customers transition to more sustainable packaging.
  2. Low-VOC, water-based, and renewable-solvent ink systems
    The latest ink platforms are dramatically reducing emissions by replacing traditional solvents with low-VOC, MEK-free systems and water-based inks for corrugated and monochrome printing. Eco-solvents, such as limonene and ethyl lactate, help improve operator safety and reduce odour, allowing converters to meet stricter air-quality standards without changing standard production workflows. Bio-based ethanol, butanol, pinene, methyl and ethyl soyate have also been noted for having excellent biodegradability.
  3. PFAS-free and pollutant-reduced formulations
    While Domino’s ink formulations have been PFAS-free for a long time, many ink manufacturers are now removing PFAS from new ink ranges to meet 2026 legislation deadlines. There is also a move to eliminate persistent organic
    pollutants (POPs). This innovation reduces compliance risk by meeting current and future regulations, pre-empting the need for future ink reformulation, and assures converters of long-term regulatory compatibility with tightening regulatory frameworks such as PPWR and EPR.
  4. Design for recyclability and high-performance de-inking
    Several new ink technologies directly improve substrate recycling outcomes, including primers that enable UV-cured inks to be removed more easily and plant-oil-based inks that perform well in enzyme-based de-inking processes. These developments reduce the likelihood of downgraded recyclate, helping converters to deliver products that meet stricter recycling performance expectations.
  5. Optimisation for energy-efficient curing and drying
    Fast-drying aqueous ink systems, such as Domino’s AQ95 inkset for corrugated printing, are formulated to dry efficiently. This reduces the number of drying modules required, cutting the press footprint, and reducing carbon emissions by lowering energy consumption. For converters, this means faster throughput, lower overheads, and improved sustainability scores. Ink systems optimised for UV LED curing represent another technology upgrade. This shift allows converters to reduce energy consumption, remove mercury-based curing lamps, and achieve safer, more stable curing.

Future-proofing printed packaging

Converters can help brands seeking to future-proof their packaging against evolving, sustainability-driven regulatory demands by working with a trusted equipment partner that invests heavily in in-house ink development and manufacture. China’s Paper Industry

The U.S. paper and pulp industry is not disappearing, but it has declined over the past two decades compared with China and other global competitors. The industry has consolidated, and mills have closed. Wisconsin was once a global center of innovation and production, but today its paper and pulp industries face major challenges that must be addressed at the state and national levels to support this once-dominant manufacturing sector in northern Wisconsin. The forestry industry is severely distressed affected by the closure of more than twenty-five facilities. Still, Wisconsin’s specialty paper, tissue, towel, label, and packaging sectors remain bright spots in paper manufacturing. Today, paper and pulp manufacturing employs about 7,800 people in Wisconsin, down from more than 40,000 in the early 1970s. Wisconsin can learn from China’s support for its paper and pulp industries, which helped China become a world leader.

Why China Grew So Fast and the Key Reasons include:

  1. The Chinese government identified paper and packaging as strategic industries and supported growth.
  2. Massive government support and domestic demand with reduced corporate tax rates, accelerated depreciation, export-related tax benefits, and industrial parks infrastructure:
  3. Lower manufacturing costs
  4. Low-cost financing for the mills
  5. Industrial development policies
  6. Infrastructure Investments in ports, transportation, and logistics
  7. Explosive Manufacturing Growth
  8. China’s export economy created strong domestic and international demand for corrugated boxes, packaging papers, tissue and household products, and specialty papers, driven by e-commerce.
  9. The focus is on Large-Scale Modern Paper Mills with closing down small mills. China built new, highly efficient mills with lower production costs. New facilities operate as scales much larger than the older North American mills.
  10. Chinese companies invested in pulp capacity and fiber supply chains in countries such as Brazil, Indonesia, Canada, plus inside of China planting billions of trees.
  11. Investments in Engineering Education, Technical Training, Manufacturing Skills Development, and University Industry Partnerships.

Why U.S. Industry Declines

  1. The decline is primarily in printing and writing paper grades.
  2. U.S. Paperboard has fallen 30% since 2000’s.
  3. Aging mill infrastructure especially in Wisconsin
  4. Higher labor costs compared with international competitors.
  5. The demand and requirements from the DNR and environmental compliance will prevent any additional investments in the State of Wisconsin
  6. Competition from lower-cost global producers with limited environmental restrictions and not complying with verifying their source for pulp. The US Pulp Manufacturing Companies are required to comply!

If Wisconsin is to survive, we will need to focus on the following:

  • Advanced Packaging Technologies
  • Sustainable fiber products
  • Molded fiber replacing plastics.
  • The development of new coating technologies
  • Specialty Paper Products
  • Established Tissue, Towels, and Hygiene Products manufacturers
  • Automating and upgrading existing facilities
  • Abundant forest resource
  • Education with Universities and Technical Colleges
  • A skilled and experienced workforce
  • Manufacturing supporting industries experience in the paper and pulp industries
  • A large Packaging Industry
  • A large Converting Industry
  • A large Printing Industry including Flexible Packaging, Label, and the Board Industry
  • A large Food Manufacturing Industry

Rather than trying to compete directly with China, Asia, and Europe, Wisconsin current advantage is high-value packaging, converting, printing, and specialty paper products.
