High-speed CNC Machining Capabilities Generate Lower Costs

Titletown Manufacturing provides quality CNC machining in Green Bay

The speed with which Titletown Manufacturing can complete CNC machining services for original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and other customers creates cost savings opportunities without sacrificing quality. Our Wisconsin workforce is dedicated to delivering the consistency our customers expect from their CNC machining partner.

CNC Machinery in Titletown Manufacturing

“The advantages of high-efficiency CNC machining apply to both high-quantity and low-quantity orders,” explains Chris Fuss, co-owner of Titletown Manufacturing. “We can make parts fast using CNC equipment, which results in reduced cost to our customers.”

Titletown Manufacturing’s CNC machining expertise serves as the foundation to its array of capabilities, including custom metal milling and machine assembly services. Paper converting, pulp, tissue and defense contractors comprise the majority of our customer base. We also serve as a supply partner for manufacturers of food production systems, material handling equipment and machinery, and energy industry machines.

Equipment upgrades enhance CNC machining capabilities

Titletown Manufacturing makes continuous investments in machinery that enhance our ability to provide high-quality CNC machining services at rapid rates. Case in point is our horizontal machine center (HMC), which greatly reduces the delay between machining cycles.

“Our workers can set up materials on one side of the HMC while the other side performs the CNC machining operations,” notes Titletown Manufacturing co-owner Dan Hilliard. “The table rotates 180 degrees, so there is no downtime in doing either function.”

The HMC can achieve tolerances down to .0002 of an inch, providing OEMs with the quality they require in completing multiple builds at a time. The HMC is one of several machines in our shop that support our commitment to delivering exceptional value from CNC machining operations.

NEW North, Wis. (Sept. 20, 2022) – Less than one month remains to register for the 2022 Manufacturing First Expo & Conference — Wisconsin’s largest annual manufacturing conference. Registration closes Oct. 18 for the event, which will be held Wednesday, Oct. 26 from 7 a.m.-4 p.m. in Green Bay.

With a record number of exhibitors, this year’s conference is the largest in event history and has moved to its largest host venue ever: the sprawling, 125,000-square-foot Resch Expo, which opened in 2020 at 840 Armed Forces Drive in Ashwaubenon.

Manufacturing First caps National Manufacturing Month by providing Wisconsin manufacturers with hands-on opportunities to grow their businesses through education and networking. The expo hall opens at 9:30 a.m. and will feature more than 230 exhibitors. The day also includes a keynote address, lunch speakers and 12 breakout sessions covering some of the most pressing issues facing the manufacturing industry, including talent attraction and retention, security, technology and marketing. The event concludes with Power Hour, where attendees can win prizes. A cocktail reception will also be held on the expo floor.

This year’s keynote speaker will be The Sileo Group CEO John Sileo, an international cybersecurity expert and the author of four books who has learned from the painful experience of losing his multi-million-dollar software company over cybercrimes he didn’t commit. He will share what he has learned using humor, personal stories and blockbuster films.

“No matter who’s in the audience, I’ll shift their perspective on how to think about [cybersecurity] in a very proactive, action-oriented, optimistic way, rather than just driving fear,” Sileo says. “It’s really important to me that I present it in a non-technical, friendly way. There’s so much that’s dry and technical about cybersecurity, and yet in the end it’s really about human beings, about us as employees or individuals making decisions.”

Manufacturing First is presented by First Business Bank in partnership with Insight Publications and the NEW Manufacturing Alliance.

General registration is $165 per person and is currently open at www.manufacturingfirst.com. For any additional questions about the event, please contact Ann Franz, NEWMA executive director, at (920) 498-5587 or Ann.Franz@nwtc.edu.

Pixelle Specialty Solutions to Close Mill in Jay, Maine Q1 2023

September 20, 2022

Jay, ME — Pixelle Specialty Solutions LLC (“Pixelle”), a leading manufacturer of specialty papers in North America, has announced the mill located in Jay, ME will close in the first quarter of 2023. The mill employs approximately 230 people who will be affected by the closure. The mill  produces specialty label and release papers, as well as industrial and packaging solutions for  eCommerce and food service. Its two paper machines have a capacity of 230,000 tons annually.

“The dedicated and skilled paper making employees in our mill in Jay, Maine have worked  tirelessly to achieve financial sustainability in challenging economic times,” said Timothy R. Hess,  President and CEO of Pixelle. “They have produced products of the highest quality and  maintained a safe work environment. Economic forces beyond our control have combined to  make profitable operations at the mill unsustainable. We are grateful for the efforts of the  employees and are committed to assisting them with offers of continued employment at other  Pixelle locations or outplacement support.”

The mill has endured significant business and financial challenges that were compounded by the April 2020 rupture of one of its pulp digesters and catastrophic damage impacting the continued operability of the entire pulp mill. No one was injured in the event, and the mill subsequently transitioned into higher margin specialty products and invested capital to increase operational efficiencies while operating on purchased pulp. The company intends to work with its customers where possible to transition their products to other Pixelle mills or to plan for volumes of orders  in the limited production leading up to mill closure. “Pixelle will continue to manufacture high-quality specialty solutions for our valued customers at  our three specialty mills in Wisconsin, Pennsylvania and Ohio,” said David E. Dickerhoof, Sr.  Vice President of Sales and Marketing. “Business conditions and the strength of our broad range  of products will offer us continued growth opportunities in serving our customers in the specialty  labels, food packaging, industrial specialties and premium printing markets.”

BakerTitan’s extensive library of water based adhesive formulas and long history supplying a broad  range of paper converting operations and JMIS’s core business of supplying and maintaining equipment  in the industry, allows the two companies to exploit their strengths for a mutually beneficial partnership  that will offer superior service for customers across regions.

The creation of this partnership was driven by the needs of both companies to expand their coverage in  both geography and product offering. This agreement allows BakerTitan to offer increased service to  existing customers in the region and allow JMIS to expand its services and products to its customer base.

“From our initial introduction, we saw an obvious overlap in customer base and an expansive opportunity  for mutual benefits working with JMIS,” said Jeffrey Zelman, Co-Owner, BakerTitan.

Goodbye to China, Reinvest in Wisconsin

GOODBYE TO CHINA AND INVEST IN THE WISCONSIN PAPER INDUSTRY NOW!  WISCONSIN HAS ALL THE TOOLS TO SUPPORT IT!

Marty Ochs

Unfortunately, over the past 20 plus years China has simply dominated the pulp and paper industry! Wisconsin and the USA must be clear-eyed about the stranglehold China & Asia have over the manufacturing, supply chain, transportation and resources supporting pulp and paper. China has purchased some critical assets in the United States and the trend will continue. The Paper and Pulp industry is the key to support our (PPCM) Printing, Packaging, Converting and Manufacturing Industries!  We have a section below pointing out the current issues with China that will have a major impact on their pulp and paper industries. Now is time to bring back paper & pulp production to Wisconsin and the United States for our national security supporting our businesses and communities!

The Wisconsin Printing, Packaging and Converting Industries were built from the innovation of the Wisconsin Paper Industry.  George W. Mead with Consolidated Papers built a world class mill developing the finest coated paper company in the world and it is shut down.  Appleton Papers developed NCR and Wisconsin has so many of these success stories of innovation. Today, Wisconsin has seen our fine paper production continue to decline, leaving the State of Wisconsin and the 5P industries becoming dependent on Europe, Asia, India and a number of other countries that are putting in new state of the art paper machines.  Wisconsin will lose our printing and converting industries unless we can re-invest in our Wisconsin Paper Mills.  Today, we can’t find enough pulp or paper to supply our industries with allotments, long lead times, escalating prices, forcing consumers to find other venues and reducing the demand for printed products!  The fine printing paper market is 24% of the paper production in the USA.

GBIG will be doing a series of articles to make our industries aware of what is happening and the importance of the paper industry to Wisconsin.  The Wisconsin Printing Industry has over 30,000 employees, the paper industry has 30,000, the Converting Industry has over 20,000 employees and our forestry industry has 39,000 employees plus a large manufacturing base that supplies equipment and services to the paper and pulp industry.

China has become the largest paper manufacturing nation in the world displacing the USA!  We will continue to see this trend with China building bigger tissue and fine paper mills producing uncoated and coated papers.  According to FAO data compiled by Statista, China’s paper and paperboard production has grown over 21% in the past decade while production in the USA has declined by over 12%. (https://www.stastista.com/statistics/240598/production-of-paper-and-cardboard-in-selected-countries/).  Uncoated and Coated papers are in desperate need in Wisconsin to support the printing, label, converting and packaging industries!  Furthermore, China has directed smaller paper companies to shut down, consolidate or merge with the larger paper companies!  Since the early 1990’s the Chinese companies have simply dominated the paper industry financed by the Chinese government!  Unfortunately, the Wisconsin Paper industry has not invested in new equipment forgetting what MADE WISCONSIN – THE PAPER INDUSTRY.  For nearly 175 years, the Wisconsin Paper Industry supported great paying jobs across the state especially in communities in northern regions that need those kinds of opportunities for economic sustainability.  Despite the decline in paper production, the industry is the 5th largest industry in Wisconsin and the state remains the largest paper producer in the nation.

With war in Ukraine started by Russia and supported by China, the world Geo-Political situation should wake up the State of Wisconsin to come up with a business plan to re-build the Wisconsin Paper Industry.  We will no longer be able to rely on China or for that matter Europe to supply paper to the USA market.  The 5P, Converting and supporting manufacturing base is predicated on the supply of pulp and paper.  Without it, Wisconsin will see many companies go out of business or experience a lot significant hardships. The trend is starting to take place in the printing industries with a decline in employment.   If the Business Community, Government, etc. can’t put in place a Business Plan to BRING BACK PAPER to Wisconsin, we will continue to decline and never be able to recover.  We have seen a 50% employment reduction in the Paper, Pulp and the supporting Forestry Industries from 1990 to 2022 in Wisconsin.  China has seen explosive growth in paper industry employment from 2002 to 2022!  Based upon statista, China employed over 608,000 people in the Paper and Paperboard Industry in December 2022. As of March 2022 the Wisconsin Paper Industry projects 30,000 employees.
