Precision machining and fabrication remain company strengths

Jesse Turkow
Jesse Turkow

Titletown Manufacturing LLC has promoted Jesse Turkow to general manager and a co-ownership role with the Green Bay-based precision machining and fabrication specialist. Turkow, who previously served as the company’s operations manager, joins Chris Fuss as co-owner as a result of the retirement of former co-owner Dan Hilliard.

“Titletown Manufacturing would not be the company it is today without the contributions of Dan Hilliard over the past 15 years,” Fuss says. “We wish him well in his retirement and are looking forward to continuing his commitment to excellence with Jesse Turkow taking on expanded responsibilities.”

Fuss and Hilliard took over ownership of Titletown Manufacturing in 2009 and moved operations into its current facility in 2021. Turkow is adding additional business office functions to retaining his duties overseeing operations. The company has served customers throughout northeastern Wisconsin and beyond for approximately 70 years.

Precision machining delivers tight-tolerance parts

Original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) entrust their precision machining and fabrication needs to Titletown Manufacturing’s highly trained workforce for a wide range of products. Proficiencies with aluminum, bronze, mild steel, high-carbon steels and stainless steel make the company a go-to supplier for a variety of projects.

Titletown Manufacturing has upgraded equipment and facilities over the past several years to become one of the region’s premier job shops. The company manufactures parts, component subassemblies and complete machine assemblies for industries as varied as paper production, paper converting, food-grade equipment, and chemical production and storage.

Two overhead 10-ton bridge cranes enable Titletown Manufacturing to manage much larger projects than most midsize machine shops. In addition, its ability to perform precision machining, fabrication and assembly services under one roof minimizes the need for multiple subcontractors and simplifies communication.

About Titletown Manufacturing LLC

GBIG Fosters Collaborative Growth in 5P and Converting Industries

A Green Bay-based business consortium has opened the door to mutually beneficial collaboration between diverse companies. The Green Bay Innovation Group (GBIG) is a business-to-business leader in the Packaging, Paper, Plastics, Printing, Pulp (5P Industries) and Converting industries in Wisconsin. GBIG supports the Great Lakes Region by empowering innovation and technology.

Marty Oochs of Greenbay Innovation Group

GBIG, which started in 2017 with one member, has grown to 175 members from across the U.S. and the world. GBIG builds authentic relationships while promoting business opportunities, education, and networking.

The key to GBIG’s success is the ability to highlight the innovations of world class manufacturing in the region. In the past, these industries were unrecognized for their innovation and technologies, yet they exported their manufacturing products across the globe. Northeast and Southeast Wisconsin form the Converting Corridor of the U.S., providing tremendous growth opportunities for the region.

Marty Ochs, GBIG executive director, has 50 years of experience in the 5P Industries. He recognized the importance of developing a business-to-business professional organization to serve Wisconsin’s diverse 5P and converting companies. GBIG hosts educational events, tours, seminars, a golf outing, and an annual expo. Recent GBIG events delved into the themes of PFAS in Food Packaging and Converting, Coating, and Sustainability.

GBIG publishes a free, bi-weekly e-newsletter called the GBIG News. The GBIG News shares the latest innovations, announcements, and events in the industry. GBIG also empowers women in the profession by supporting an offshoot of the organization – Wi5P (Women in the 5P Industries).

In addition to promoting collaboration and innovation in the 5P Industry, GBIG contributes to the broader community. The Green Bay Innovation Group Foundation donates to nonprofits, community outreach programs, education, and the business community.

GBIG offers free membership, supported by members. To join GBIG, learn more about the organization, or subscribe to the GBIG News, visit www.greenbayinnovationgroup.com

Making Paper at the Children’s Museum

By Joan Koehne

Birds and butterflies are sure signs of spring. Thanks to the Handmade Papermakers of Green Bay and Beyond, my great-nephew, 4, and I made a paper bird and butterfly on Saturday, April 13. What a nice memento of our morning together at the Children’s Museum of Green Bay. We attended Paper Play, the free, hand-dipped papermaking event sponsored by GBIG, Women of the 5P Industries, and Handmade Papermakers of Green Bay and Beyond.

Woman helping little boy make paper

To make paper, we started by tearing up a sheet of white paper and colored paper into small pieces. I chose blue paper. Then we scooped up a pint of water, added our torn paper and blended the mixture until it was well-blended. I added dried flowers to the mixture to add color and texture. Next, we chose a cookie cutter so we could make our paper in a fun shape. I chose a bird. We poured the water into the cookie cutter set on a screen, and collected the run-off water in a metal can. Then, we used a sponge and a wooden block to press out the excess water. We hung the bird on the window, so we could see it and let it dry.

The end result was a soft and pretty blue bird with yellow tones. I brought it home and hung it on my refrigerator. On Saturday, April 13,

If you have young children, then schedule a visit to the Children’s Museum of Green Bay. There’s so much to do for the little ones. After we finished our handmade paper bird and butterfly, we spent a lot of time playing in the water and catching fish in the water play area. The Fire Station and Vet Clinic were our other favorites.

Here’s something interesting for GBIG members and their families. The Trades in Training exhibit is coming soon to the museum. This exhibit is designed and created by Kidzibits. Northeast Wisconsin Technical College is partnering with the museum on the exhibit. Trades in Training will allow kids to explore carpentry, electricity, welding and plumbing. The museum will provide weekly programming focused on these trades.

Kids learn by playing. The Children’s Museum of Green Bay created a fantastic learning environment for kids – and a fun place for adults, too.

Thanks to GBIG, Women of the 5P Industries, and Handmade Papermakers of Green Bay and Beyond for sponsoring the hand-dipped papermaking event. The HPGGB members were so gracious, patient, and helpful to me and my 4-year-old great-nephew. We’re glad we went to Paper Play.

Great Lakes Timber Professional Association Event Draws 380 People With Outstanding Guest Speakers

The Great Lakes Timber Professionals Association (GLTPA) — Spring Logger Celebration, Harris MI.

The Island Resort and Casino in Harris MI. was host of the 2024 GLTPA Spring Logger Celebration, an event not soon forgotten. Despite the fact the forest industry has challenges, especially with sporadic roundwood pulp markets, loggers took time to communicate with one another, industry representatives and speakers to learn about things having an impact on their future.

As in years past, the Hamilton Roddis Foundation once again provided sponsorship for another lineup of exceptional speakers. In fact, several attendees stated this year’s speakers “knocked it out of the park” with quality information. The first keynote speaker, Steve Gould, founder of the “Target-Focused Life,” provided detail on how his professional target shooting exhibition career led him to another career of helping others in their quest to lead a “Target Focused Life” to achieve greater success in their businesses and daily lives.

Five people standing on stage

The second keynote speaker, Margaret Byfield, Executive Director for “American Stewards of Liberty,” provided additional thought-provoking information from a national perspective on private property rights, old growth and mature forests and the temporary demise of Natural Asset Companies with their potential negative impact on Americas natural resources.

After the keynotes, GLTPA honored Michigan House Representative Cam Cavitt with the 2024 Legislator of the Year award. Citing his role in protecting the “future of Michigan’s forest industry.” Board members commended Cavitt’s support for the Billerud mill in Escanaba to receive $200 million per Senate Bill 7 and other policies that “ensure stability for sustainable forest management.”

Just prior to the noon lunch break, certification manager for SAPPI North America Rebecca Barnard, explained the new European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) so that Great Lakes Region wood suppliers may know how to comply. When the regulation takes effect on Dec. 30 of this year, no timber or byproducts harvested from land to be converted to farmland may be sold to the E.U.

The afternoon program was again filled with knowledgeable speakers starting with Scott Dane, Executive Director for the American Loggers Council headquartered in Washington D.C. Based on his recent article “The Dismantling of the American Timber Industry” Dane reported that nationally, within the last 15 months, 50 mills have closed, resulting in the loss of 10,000 jobs.

“We’re not having any less demand for wood products; we’re just importing it from other sources,” Dane said.

Marty Ochs with 2 other men

Rounding out the afternoon of speakers was Marty Ochs from the Green Bay Innovation Group. Marty addressed at length the perceived need to bring sawmills and logging jobs back to local hands. Ochs spoke specifically about Wisconsin, mostly, but the American Loggers Council (ALC) assured the audience the problem isn’t restricted to the Great Lakes Region.

Troy Brown, President of Kretz Lumber in Antigo WI, and current President of GLTPA stated, “the need for this type of meeting and this caliber of information is needed now more than ever. Things change at the speed of thought, and it is GLTPA’s prerogative to ensure its members are armed with the best information possible to know the now and prepare for the future. Today’s speakers were nothing short of magnificent. We don’t tell members what to think, but we sure provide the information so they can think.”

Dane, along with GLTPA Director Henry Schienebeck and other loggers from around the country, will be heading to Washington, D.C. this week to represent the interests of independent contractors logging throughout the U.S.
