How to Elevate Employee Performance Above the Norm

As the Managing Director of Mercer Celgar, a global leader in the pulp industry, Bill MacPherson leads a large-scale, modern mill operating in a complex industry. What are the results? Hire Better with a Structured Board Interview

Bill knows it’s not about finding good people versus bad people. Instead, it’s about finding a good fit. Hiring managers need to avoid selecting people because they like them. Does the job candidate look like me, act like me, talk like me? That’s not necessarily going to result in a selection that’s right for the organization. Instead, selections should be based on abilities, experience, and behavioral data that’s gathered in a highly structured board interview. In a nutshell, this describes the 15dots® Selection Process. Bill was introduced to the process (then known as the Nowlin Selection Process) when he interviewed and was hired at James River 30 years ago. Since then, he has helped implement the 15dots Selection Process everywhere his career has taken him. Bill MacPherson has seen firsthand the transformational effect of the 15dots strategies in each organization.

Develop Talent with Quantifiable Feedback

Employee selection gives way to onboarding and training. Bill believes that feedback is the No. 1 way to set people up for success. Here’s his advice. When providing feedback, start with examples of exactly what employees are doing well. Tell them what behavior you’ve observed and how this behavior had measurable, quantifiable results. On the flip side, if employees are off target, tell them early on what is going on and discuss ways to change the behavior.

Celebrate Job Performance Together

The third element of Bill’s philosophy is to celebrate performance together. Instead of creating a corporate culture in which employees compete against one other, create an environment that values teamwork and collaboration. This begins in the hiring process. Select candidates who provide real-world examples of how they functioned well in a team setting. While it’s important to recognize individuals who do great work, celebrating team performance is even more essential. Team performance lays the foundation for the long-term success of an organization.

Wisconsin has a large presence of container and boxboard production facilities across the state. We have some large Wisconsin-based companies, National and International companies with manufacturing
facilities across Wisconsin. Unfortunately, a large number of them have older production facilities! We just saw GP shut down an Oshkosh plant and announce the building of new corrugated facilities elsewhere. We do appreciate ALL of GP investments in Wisconsin!!! We are seeing a number of these companies build new state-of-the-art facilities outside of Wisconsin. With the exception of Green Bay Packaging and ND Packaging a Chinese-based company, we have not seen a brand-new container or boxboard plant built in Wisconsin. The Business community and the State of Wisconsin need to take a very aggressive approach to rebuild the Wisconsin Paper Industry. The Green Bay Innovation Group is

The Boxboard prices are relatively flat while containerboard prices softened. Kraft linerboard declined $20.00 a ton while corrugated medium prices declined $40.00 a ton. Overall, the box demand is holding its own with an expected CAGR ranging from 3.00 to 4.5%. The industry is experiencing more downtime along with plant closures and diminished inventories. We expect inventory to be replaced mid-first quarter of 2023. The Amazon effect will continue with online ordering after Christmas shopping supporting the container and boxboard production. With a potential for a recession, we could see a slowdown overall! We do expect pricing to remain relative stable with some discounts! A number of companies have announced building new state of the art plants with a lot of additional capacity. However, due to supply chain and excess capacity in the market, a number of the companies are putting on hold their expansions. In 2023, we can expect a steady demand, normalizing backlogs and price stability.

Hurckman Mechanical Receives Agc Award For Island Casino Resort

Hurckman Mechanical was presented with the WI AGC Build Award for the Island Resort and
Casino project. The project presented multiple challenges, the least of which was building 12
stories above grade. Crews used a large skip hoist to move materials and teams up and down the
structure, but it was slow going. Imagine hauling 145 toilets, sinks, showers, and over 3 miles of
piping up and down 12 floors and things could slow down. Because the tower was constructed
with spancrete, Hurckman teams were challenged with placing mechanical systems around the
tension cables. The 124,000-square- foot project required planning, craftsmanship, and
experienced tradespeople to solve construction-related issues. This project and its award is a
testament to the hard work and dedication we put into our daily tasks.

Encouraging Collaboration to build back the Paper Industry in Wisconsin

I want to thank Jerimiah Jannsen Vice President of First Business Bank for putting together an excellent PODCAST on the Paper Industry and an overview of the Green Bay Innovation Group. We both grew up

It is time to DE-COUPE FROM CHINA and Build Back the paper industry in Wisconsin! Wisconsin has a $6 Billion Dollar Surplus this past year and we need to invest in What Built Wisconsin – Paper.

Menasha Corporation | Smart Girls Rock Event

Menasha Corporation was a presenting sponsor of 2022 Smart Girls Rock, a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) career exploration event for high school girls in the Fox Cities area of Wisconsin. The one-day event was held on Wednesday, Nov. 2 at the Walbec Group in Greenville, Wisconsin and is coordinated by the Fox Cities Chamber.

Wisconsin’s Paper Industry is Under Siege by China

I have attached an article published December 9, 2012: Paper Under Siege and Wisconsin has failed to grasp of the impact on the Wisconsin economy! I have listed below a number of paper mills that went out of business, reorganized, no longer producing paper or simply left the State of Wisconsin. Each Shutdown means the loss of 300 to 600 high paying jobs draining millions and millions of dollars from areas that need the employment and income. We boast that the Wisconsin Paper Industry is number one producer of paper in the USA and has 30,000 employees today and continues to decline! In 1990, the industry employed close 50,000. It has been said, one job at a paper mill creates 7 jobs supporting them! These Paper Mills drive the Printing, Packaging Converting and Forestry industries supporting a large labor force across Wisconsin.

We see the China Government pouring in Billions of Dollars buying up US Paper Mills and investing into mega-mills betting that China can control the Paper Industry worldwide with low-cost paper. Simply, Wisconsin has to re-focus it support on the paper industry. If not, we will see China buying up our Converting, Printing, Packaging and Manufacturing Companies too! Worzalla Prints 17th Installment of Diary of a Wimpy Kid

Over 250 million copies later, Worzalla continues to print wildly popular book series

Stevens Point, Wisconsin (October 26, 2022) – Worzalla, an employee-owned printing company specializing in high-quality children’s books, cookbooks, and hardcover best sellers, is celebrating the release of Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Diper Överlöde. This is the 17th book from the #1 internationally bestselling series Diary of a Wimpy Kid by author and cartoonist Jeff Kinney. Worzalla has been the domestic manufacturing headquarters of the popular series since the first book.

Publisher Abrams announced Diper Överlöde back in May of 2022 so that Worzalla could plan for the production of millions of copies of the 224-page hardcovered young adult fiction book. Worzalla managed the full process of printing the book from putting ink to page, binding, and delivery. The entire process took 80,000 manhours and 2 million pounds of paper, equivalent to the weight of about five blue whales or about two Boeing 747 aircraft at maximum takeoff weight.
