Box Latch Products shopping cart more than doubled over 25 days utilizing TikTok…a Wisconsin Success Story!

Like us, you may never have considered TikTok as a marketing option. Our introduction to this platform occurred as a result of one person stopping at our table at the PackExpo Emerging Brands Summit on October 23, 2022 in Chicago’s McCormick Place.

A guy named Corry Connors asked to shoot a short video and post it to his 80,000 TikTok followers. We said, “Sure, why not?” Within days of its November 3 posting it went viral. It has now been seen by nearly 2 million viewers with 39.4k likes, 1,773 comments and 574 shares. Though not all sales could be linked to the TikTok video, purchases on our BoxLatch™ Products shopping cart more than doubled over the next 25 days.

As it turned out Cory also hosts a sustainable packaging website and does podcasts. The amazing success of the TikTok video prompted Cory to invite BoxLatch™ CEO, Jim Wilson, to do a podcast. It was posted on December 7. Wouldn’t you know it, the success of that has led to an invitation for Jim to apply for a position as a speaker at the AICC (Independent Packaging Association) Xperience Conference in 2023.

Everyone knows that marketing is kind of like fishing; you never know what the next super lure will be or where the big lunker is lurking. Jason Mathwig joins New North Inc. as Industry Alliance Director

Will lead organization’s industry alliance engagement efforts through strategic partnerships

NEW NORTH, November 21, 2022 – Jason Mathwig, a regional professional with extensive experience in developing community partnerships, will join New North Inc. as Industry Alliance Director, President and CEO Barb LaMue announced. The appointment becomes effective on Dec. 5, 2022.

In the role, Mathwig will lead industry alliance outreach and engagement efforts through strategic partnerships with regional employers, as well as workforce development, educational and community-based organizations. He also will provide operational support for the NEW Digital Alliance and NEW Construction Alliance, including project-management oversight for alliance-based activities.

“We are excited to have someone of Jason’s caliber join our team to advance regional support for key industry sectors,” says LaMue. “His knowledge and expertise in post-secondary engagement and other life-long learning options will help to drive innovative solutions as we address regional talent pipeline needs.

“He will increase our capacity to lead initiatives, expanding collaborative efforts, and to identify solutions to pressing challenges. We also anticipate that Jason will be able to facilitate greater alignment between regional talent-development opportunities and industry partners.”

Mathwig comes to New North from the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, where he has served as executive manager of education outreach. In this position, he was the liaison with university departments and community organizations to create partnerships and outreach opportunities for K-12 students.

“I am honored and thrilled for this opportunity to be a part of the New North team,” says Mathwig. “It is an exciting time to be in the New North region, and I look forward to helping with the continued growth and innovation that serves our communities and targeted populations. I am ready to dive in and get started.”

Mathwig graduated cum laude from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire with a bachelor’s degree in mass communication-public relations, with a minor in sports administration. He later received a master’s degree in sports management from Concordia University in St. Paul, Minn. Mathwig additionally is a graduate of the Leadership Green Bay program of the Greater Green Bay Chamber.

His initial post-graduation position was as an admissions counselor at his alma mater, UW-Eau Claire.

Develop Talent with Quantifiable Feedback

Employee selection gives way to onboarding and training. Bill believes that feedback is the No. 1 way to set people up for success. Here’s his advice. When providing feedback, start with examples of exactly what employees are doing well. Tell them what behavior you’ve observed and how this behavior had measurable, quantifiable results. On the flip side, if employees are off target, tell them early on what is going on and discuss ways to change the behavior.

Wisconsin has a large presence of container and boxboard production facilities across the state. We have some large Wisconsin-based companies, National and International companies with manufacturing
facilities across Wisconsin. Unfortunately, a large number of them have older production facilities! We just saw GP shut down an Oshkosh plant and announce the building of new corrugated facilities elsewhere. We do appreciate ALL of GP investments in Wisconsin!!! We are seeing a number of these companies build new state-of-the-art facilities outside of Wisconsin. With the exception of Green Bay Packaging and ND Packaging a Chinese-based company, we have not seen a brand-new container or boxboard plant built in Wisconsin. The Business community and the State of Wisconsin need to take a very aggressive approach to rebuild the Wisconsin Paper Industry. The Green Bay Innovation Group is
putting together a group of very educated and talented individuals that support the paper industry. If you are interested in joining us, please contact Marty Ochs. The Boxboard prices are relatively flat while containerboard prices softened. Kraft linerboard declined $20.00 a ton while corrugated medium prices declined $40.00 a ton. Overall, the box demand is holding its own with an expected CAGR ranging from 3.00 to 4.5%. The industry is experiencing more downtime along with plant closures and diminished inventories. We expect inventory to be replaced mid-first quarter of 2023. The Amazon effect will continue with online ordering after Christmas shopping supporting the container and boxboard production. With a potential for a recession, we could see a slowdown overall! We do expect pricing to remain relative stable with some discounts! A number of companies have announced building new state of the art plants with a lot of additional capacity. However, due to supply chain and excess capacity in the market, a number of the companies are putting on hold their expansions. In 2023, we can expect a steady demand, normalizing backlogs and price stability.

Hurckman Mechanical Receives Agc Award For Island Casino Resort

Hurckman Mechanical was presented with the WI AGC Build Award for the Island Resort and
Casino project. The project presented multiple challenges, the least of which was building 12
stories above grade. Crews used a large skip hoist to move materials and teams up and down the
structure, but it was slow going. Imagine hauling 145 toilets, sinks, showers, and over 3 miles of
piping up and down 12 floors and things could slow down. Because the tower was constructed
with spancrete, Hurckman teams were challenged with placing mechanical systems around the
tension cables. The 124,000-square- foot project required planning, craftsmanship, and
experienced tradespeople to solve construction-related issues. This project and its award is a
testament to the hard work and dedication we put into our daily tasks.

Encouraging Collaboration to build back the Paper Industry in Wisconsin

I want to thank Jerimiah Jannsen Vice President of First Business Bank for putting together an excellent PODCAST on the Paper Industry and an overview of the Green Bay Innovation Group. We both grew up
with many family members and friends working in the Paper Industry. We understand the impact it has on our communities and the State of Wisconsin! We witnessed the demise of the majority of Paper
Mills on the Fox River and across the State. We discussed the Green Bay Innovation Group overview, our mission statement and our impact on the 5P, Converting and Supporting Industries. Wisconsin
needs to REBUILD our paper manufacturing instead of buying paper from Europe, China and countries across the globe! A question to ponder, China lacks pulp, water, logistics and other resources for paper manufacturing! However, they can ship paper to the USA cheaper than Wisconsin can produce paper will ALL of the resources in Wisconsin. It is time to DE-COUPE FROM CHINA and Build Back the paper industry in Wisconsin! Wisconsin has a $6 Billion Dollar Surplus this past year and we need to invest in What Built Wisconsin – Paper.
